So, maybe things will get better when you get home? You’ve dashed through the rain and finally get to the front door, soaking wet to suddenly remember you left your key on the dining room table. Both your parents are out, and you’re left trying to shelter on the doorstep with nowhere to go. Lucy, on the other hand, stays behind with the school choir and misses the rain, walks home in the beautiful sunshine and her parents welcome her home with chocolates and half of the bands from this years Glastonbury playing in her back garden. OK, so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but sometimes, that’s what it feels like.

So why is this? Why are some of us winning the lottery and picking four leaf clovers all the time, yet the rest of us fall flat on our faces? Is it luck? Is it karma? Well I believe it’s the law of luck. In simple terms, what you put into the world is what you get back. It’s not about looking stunning and wearing the latest designer clothes; it’s about how you feel, your respect for the people around you, and your respect for yourself. It may sound slightly overrated, but I bet Lucy follows at least some of these simple rules. Here are the main ones...

Law One

Take Care of Yourself

OK, it’s a bit of a cliché, but there is nothing better for your luck than caring about yourself. This doesn’t mean you have to make yourself look great, it means giving yourself an attractive vibe that, well, attracts people! It’s not about dieting and going to bed really early, it’s about giving yourself time to breathe, making time for you - time to reflect and relax. It also means taking care of your individual needs. If you want to eat chocolate, eat chocolate- just make sure you have a balanced diet and throw a bit of exercise into you routine. Taking care of yourself also consists of protecting yourself from the things in life that harm you, so walk away from those bitching girls in the corridor - you’re better off staying away from the people or things that cause you trouble! Lucky people aren’t always running around breathless and unorganised, they think ahead and even go out of there way to learn from and avoid trouble.

Law Two

Think of Other People

You like to be listened to, right? So what about listening back? Your best friend is really down, so why not talk to them, they’d appreciate the time that you give them! Let the people you care about know that you’re there for. Remember- everything you give is always returned. You might even enjoy hearing about your friends’ ups and downs. Lucky people understand the true meaning of being a good friend. They understand more about life’s ups and downs and about people and their complexities. Having a good understanding of others and what we go through also makes us value life and live it to the full!

Law Three

Accept

You’re amazing just the way you are right now. Yeah, you’ll change people will enter and exit your life all the time. You’ll have your ups and downs, but that’s life. Worrying about the past or the future doesn’t solve anything. Things happen for a reason- you’ll always learn from the hurdles and traumas which can only make you wiser and more equipped to deal with stuff. What’s the point in exhausting yourself from worry? Just take life as it is. It’s not simple, but sometimes it’s better to accept the way things are rather than to stress about the things that have been and gone, or the things that may never happen.

Law Four

Understand what not to do

We all know that it’s not possible to live a perfect life and follow all the rules that are suggested. Everyone likes to let go, bitch about people who are absolutely doing our head in or tell a best mate to get lost when we’re having a bad day. My advice is just to be the best person you can, you know? Think of other people’s feelings but don’t get too caught up in their problems (even though you care an awful lot). Also, stop agreeing to things that you don’t really want to. Never pretend to listen to the people who know best, just listen to the old wise guys!
