Sheffield seems to be an accomplished city in churning out indie talent, with bands as the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and Little Man Tate storming the scene. But what about rock I hear you ask? It’s been a good while since we’ve seen Def Leopard in the charts. Actually there are loads of young bands producing some really diverse and interesting rock sounds in Sheffield.
I caught up with experimental metal quartet Coyote Mad Seeds, while they were practicing recently to find out what they’re about…
Who are you and what do you play?
Joe : I’m Joe and I play guitar.
Conor : My name’s Conor and I play guitar. And me and Joe also sing
Seb : I’m Seb. I play bass.
Rik : I’m Rik and I play drums.

What made you want to start a band?
C : Well, I met Rik about a year ago at a music festival and he told me that he plays drums, so I said “oh right I’m looking to start a band.” So we got together and jammed a bit, then we met Joe and then we met Seb, and that’s basically how it happened and we’re sounding great!

Are there any bands that have influenced you?
J : The main ones are Metallica, ACDC, but if I carried on we would be here all night!
C : Erm... Korn? David Bowie?

What made you think of the name Coyote Mad Seeds?
J : Well the original idea was Coyote Love Seeds but we hated the love part…
C : It sounded a bit spunky!
C : We wanted something that sounded sorta American so we can appeal to that sort of market. And we recognised that bands usually had three words in their name ya know like “My Chemical Romance” and “Coheed and Cambria” all that sort stuff…
R : All your favourite bands then…
C : I don’t like Coheed and Cambria! What ya on about Rik? Yeah so that’s basically it.

Where do you see yourselves in three years?
J : I see myself in bed with ten thousand groupies.
C : We all know that won’t happen!

J : You’re only jealous.
C :
Well hopefully playing larger and larger places as we go on. Go on some festival bills and stuff like that. That sorta thing

Are you focusing on recording music or playing gigs at the moment?

R : Bit of both really.
C : Well, we are concentrating on getting a set together. But when we tighten up and everything… We have our own studio which is great, because we can record whenever we want and it doesn’t cost anything.
J : We are still writing songs, we have a few uncompleted songs that need finishing, so mainly at the moment we’re recording.

Are you planning any gigs at the moment?

C : We’ve got a few gigs coming up in the year and we are gonna try and organise some more soon.

Is image a concern for your band?

J : Not for me because I looked like one of the Beetles before I changed my hair.
C : Well, I think it’s important for every band, I think that’s half the battle for breaking through into the industry. I think it’s more of a concern for me and Seb than Joe and Rik.
C : Yeah, but Joe and Rik put in a bit of effort, don’t you?
J : Rik doesn’t put in effort in one bit! A few piercings and that’s it.
C : It works though!

Are there any interesting facts you wanna share?
J : Well, I’m single, I can touch my nose with my tongue and I can tuck my ears in.
S : You have a really long tongue.

J : Yeah I have a really long tongue.
C : I think Rik should talk for a bit.
R : Why would I want to talk? I’m shy!
S : Yeah ok, I play bass, but they knew that. But I also made my own bass guitar.
R : I don’t really do much, except work and have needles shoved through my face! But I play drums sometimes when I get home from work if I’m not too tired.
S : We like decorating your room don’t we? With marker pens.
R : Yeah, the guys like to throw food around, draw on the walls, take the paint off, and basically leave me to tidy it up.
C : You start it! Basically, add us on myspace, you have no excuse not to really.
R : We have a rugby player, a cone head, a make up man, and a pin head.
J : Pin cushion!

Sheffield is also host to a multitude of clubs and pubs that support upcoming and unsigned bands, from the Boardwalk, Corporation and the Grapes, who generally play rock music, to the more poppy and indie clubs such as the Leadmill and the Plug. They are all great places to find up and coming local talent.
