Bollywood or Hollywood? Shah Rukh Khan or Leonardo Di Caprio? Which do you prefer? Do you know what Bollywood is? No…? Then I’m here to tell you more about it and just why you might fancy watching a film or two.

What is Bollywood?

Bollywood is a successful Asian film industry that is considered a “threat to Hollywood” according to some people, including me! You might be surprised to learn Bollywood release more movies than Hollywood.. but are they better? Here’s some reasons why I think Bollywood is better!

** Some people think that Bollywood is all about romance. Not true. Bollywood has loads of variety, some of which take inspiration from famous Hollywood movies. This means Asian audiences, who do not understand or watch English films, can relate to the films they are missing out on. Some examples of the films that have been inspired by Hollywood are, Kasoor (Jagged Edge) and Raaz (What Lies Beneath)

** Hollywood doesn’t release as many family films as Bollywood. This is a downer because you don’t always want to see two actors lip locking each other with your family! Bollywood contains scenes that everyone can relate to.

** Bollywood traditionally is associated with happy films but these days more films are tackling serious issues. Such as the film ‘Black’ - about a girl who was born blind, deaf and without speech.

** Bollywood music, ‘filmi music’, is the type of music that can be heard any time, any place! The lyrics are pre- recorded and mimed while acting (‘cause we all know that a fit face doesn’t always have a fit voice fit enough for singing!)

** Bollywood contain songs, colour, dance and emotion. So if you just wanna get your groove on then moove on to Bollywood.

Some great Bollywood films:

1) Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge – In this romantic a man falls in love with a girl and her father doesn’t approve of the marriage. It’s dilemma time!
2) Tere Naam – In this movie a gangster falls in love with a girl. Will the girl love him or will she reject him? Lots of action, suspense and romance!
3) Hulchul– Two young people from feuding families fall in love. Their families are against their love. The girl gets married to someone else, at least that’s what she thinks!
4) Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai – A guy saves a blind girl’s life and they fall in love, despite the fact the girl cannot see him. Things develop with a bit of a romantic twist, another must see!!
5) Rang De Basanti – An English girl goes to India to make a movie for her late grandfather, based on his diary. This is a film where we learn about a person’s heritage and uncover some shocks too!
