Amir Khan

Inspired by... Amir Khan

ATHENS, GREECE - He is young, British and fights as a featherweight.

It's the return of Prince Naseem Hamed right?

Wrong.  His name is Amir Khan and he is not only Great Britain's newest boxing sensation, but also the country's only Olympic representative in the boxing competition in Athens, Greece.

Amir was only a 13-year-old high school freshman when Audley Harrison won a gold medal in Sydney four years ago in the Super Heavyweight division.

Then 4 years later at the young age of 17, Amir went to Athens competing in the Olympics. He was fighting for Great Britain. When he went there alone, he missed his family so much, they came to join him in Athens.  Amir will be Britain's youngest Olympic boxer since Colin Jones in 1976.

And that's where the potential records just begin.

If Amir were to capture the gold medal, he would have done it before boxing’s greatest of all time Muhammad Ali, who captured gold at the age of 18.

Amir was considered too young to compete in the Amateur Boxing Association’s senior championships, so he had his eyes set for the next Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
By June, Amir had already been crowned European and world junior champion after a series of telling victories in Lithuania and later Korea.
And such was his running in the world, he was named best boxer of the tournament after picking up his lightweight gold.
At www.people.co.uk (11/04/04) they labelled Amir 'the new Naz' after British professional boxer 'Prince' Naseem Hamed. Amir admits that he is not too fond of the label, saying, he liked the way Hamed boxed but outside the ring he was too big-headed. “I'll keep my own feet on the ground and my family's support helps me too."  Well I don’t think he’s the new Naz, he’s a whole new boxer altogether, and he’s a different person as well.
