Desiree Reynolds
is our February Writer

My concern as a writer is truth. I know that sounds a bit ‘hippy’, but I mean it. Truth, that is completely different to facts. Anyone can produce facts and figures but the truth of a situation, the heart of it, is much harder to obtain. So I want your truth, your take on things, don’t worry about spelling or grammar, write as you talk, think as you feel.

As young writers I want you to recognise your own voice, you have as much to say as anyone else and what you have to say is just as important as anyone else.  But if you’re on this scheme you probably already know that, right? And so to work, (not compulsory if you have carrier bags full of stuff, ready to show me!)

Try Dee's writing exercise

Try a piece of writing about food. Food, eating, consumption, it’s what every living thing on this planet has to do. It also conjures up memories, good and bad, says a lot about family, religion, race, class, sexuality, gender and politics. It touches all those issues and more. If you want to have a go at doing something (a small piece about 500 words, poetry, article, memoir, anything), about food, that’s cool. Keep notebooks on you at all times, and keep ya eyes open, stories are everywhere.

Also give ‘morning pages’ a go. That is, when you wake up, before you’ve even brushed your teeth (! ), grab a notebook and let it all out, whatever, dreams, stuff that’s bugged you, sentences that have been haunting you on the bus, write it all down, you never know where it can lead. Good luck.

Innabit.
